Shamrock Smoothie

With St.Patrick’s Day around the corner (seriously, where did February go?), the foodie world is flooded with theme recipes to go with the occasion, from beer infused meals, like my Steak and Porter Pie, to every green concoction you can think of.

When it comes to celebrating St Patrick’s Day, I’m not really a green beer drinking kinda girl, nor am I that eager to try the ever popular Shamrock Shake from McDonalds (if you read  the nutrition facts, you’ll understand why). I do however, on an almost daily basis, like to drink green smoothies. So, I thought it would be fun to whip up a healthy, creamy option for those looking for something to celebrate the day with. With a touch of vanilla and a hint of mint, this smoothie is the perfect treat.

With only 6 ingredients, no sugar, no food colouring, and a bunch of protein, I’d like to introduce my Shamrock Smoothie. Creamy, delicious and lightly sweet, I think it’s definitely a winner.

1 banana

1 Cup spinach

1/2 Cup mint leaves

1/2 Cup greek yogurt

1 1/2 Cups almond milk

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 Cup hemp hearts *

ice

Place all the ingredients in a blender in the order given. Blend until creamy and smooth. Serves 2

*I used hemp hearts in this recipe, but you could try adding any of your favourite seeds, such as flax, chia.

  1. Awesome! So how many calories does this version have (out of curiosity)?
    I happen to have a “hemp hearts” situation in that I stocked up because I found a store that was selling the Manitoba hemp hearts for so cheap, and I love them, but I was wondering what I could do with them besides sprinkle them on yogurt, so this is perfect!

    • Yes, I understand that “situation”, lol. I usually buy the Costco sized bag. The entire recipe is around 500 calories, which makes 2 servings (I forgot to note that in the recipe). Besides yogurt and smoothies, another great way to use the hemp hearts is by adding them to muffins. I usually add about 1/4 Cup to almost any recipe.

  5. Yum! I only discovered hemp hearts a year ago and what a find! Your smoothie looks divine. I wish I had some spinach (or even kale) on hand right now, as I could use the boost.
